The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration with 169 member states and 8 states holding an observer status. Since 2016 we are the UN Migration Agency.
IOM believes that humane and orderly migration benefits both the migrants and societies. As part of its activities, IOM has been carrying out Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) for almost 40 years.
IOM believes that migration is not a phenomenon that can or should be stopped but rather a reality in the world we are living. Properly managed, migration can function for the benefit of all; migrants and societies.
IOM is mandated by its Constitution to ensure orderly migration. Among other IOM programmes, Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) is an important part of migration management. It aims for humane return and reintegration of migrants who are unable or unwilling to remain in their host countries.
AVRR helps migrants return to their home countries in a humane, safe and dignified manner. Beneficiaries who decide to return through AVRR are able to prepare for their travel and for the time after return. Many of IOM’s AVRR programmes also provide support for returnees’ reintegration process. Services and support provided by IOM may vary according to the host country and country of origin, and are usually free of charge for the beneficiaries.
Voluntariness is a central aspect of the AVRR; this includes that the returnees always choose themselves, and based on an informed decision, to participate in IOM’s programmes. To this end, IOM and its partners also aim to provide returnees with all necessary information throughout the return process. In addition, this also means that the returnees can cancel their return journey at any time.
Through its AVRR activities IOM aims to:
- Ensure the dignity and rights of migrants
- Contribute to a sustainable return through reintegration assistance
- Increase dialogue between host countries and countries of origin about the return process
- Encourage regular means of migration
IOM Finland offers AVRR services in three countries: Finland, Iceland and Sweden. IOM Finland has over 15 years of experience in assisting migrants to return home in a safe and dignified manner. We provide administrative, logistical and financial support to migrants who wish to return voluntarily to their countries of origin. IOM Finland makes use of the organization’s world-wide network of offices and partners to support this work.
